Tertullus Ludington of Catskill, New York

While reviewing my Catskill Village cemetery photos in preparation for uploading them to findagrave.com, I realized that I had stumbled upon information regarding the children of Tertullus Ludington, my 5th great grandfather. His gravestone listed his death as 16 Jul 1821 at age 48. I had forgotten that I'd found other family members buried next to him.

Tertullus was born to Colonel Henry Ludington and wife Abigail in Dutchess County, New York on 19 April 1773, the seventh of their twelve children.  He married Rebecca Brown on 16 Jul 1804 and they had numerous children, possibly seven between 1805 and 1820.  Note that I did not have a record of a son named Ira.

  • 1807 Julia  ** my connection
  • 1808 Amelia
  • 1809 Henry
  • 1815 Robert
  • 1817 Harriet
  • 1820 Tertullus Jr
However, I had a photograph of Ira’s gravestone identifying him as son of Tertullus and Anna Ludington. He died 16 Jun 1821 at age 6. Near him were the gravestones of both parents: mother as Anna Egbertson, wife of Tertullus Ludington. Don’t you love when gravestones list the woman’s birth name? Most do in this cemetery.

Considering the information found, it now seems that perhaps his wife Rebecca (whose grave has not been found), was the mother of only the first four children and that Anna was the mother of the younger four, with Ira being her firstborn.

Thus far, I have not found a death record for Rebecca nor a marriage record for Tertullus and Anna. I did find an excerpt of Tertullus’ probate record which names  his wife as Ann mentioning 7 children.  Must get that record. To be continued

  1. Might search for Anna in Texas, I am working backwards. It appears that my 2nd great grandfather is Robert. Robert went to Texas and died there. You can get his will on line. It appears Robert's oldest son took his mother and two younger brothers Chicago sometime after his father's death. May be Anna in Texas.

    1. Robert is my 3rd great grandfather. I have also had no luck finding a marriage record for Tertullus and Anna nor a death record for Rebecca.
